FOG Formula

The FOG readability formula is available!

The FOG readability formula is widely used in the health care industry and throughout the entire business community.

The FOG formula takes into consideration (1) the total number of words, (2) the number of words of three or more syllables, as well as (3) the total number of sentences.

Since FOG readability scoring aims for 90% comprehension *, except for the SMOG readabiity formula FOG grade level scores are inclined to be higher than the other formulas included in the Readability Calculations package.

* Usually referred to as a readability formula’s “criterion score” - the required level of comprehension for reading “success” as indicated by the percentage of correct answers on a test covering the material. For example, the FOG formula predicts the reading grade level normally required to correctly answer 90% of the questions covering the material.

As applied in industry and business, many reading experts feel that no technical material should score higher than grade level 14, no business material higher than grade level 12, and no clerical material higher than grade level 8.

The readability software displays this formula’s scoring results on a screen which may contain other formula results as well. (This provided you have chosen to apply more than one formula to the material being evaluated.)

To see an example of how this formula’s results are displayed by the program, click multiple formula results screen.
