Readability Formulas

Readability formulas in Micro Power & Light Co. Readability Calculations and Readability Plus software packages include Dale-Chall, Flesch Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, FOG, SMOG, Powers-Sumner-Kearl, Fry Graph, Spache and FORCAST - nine of the most popular readability formulas.

All but one of the readability formulas assume the material being evaluated is normal running narrative, i.e. absent special formatting, symbols and characters not represented on the standard keyboard.

Unlike the other eight formulas, the FORCAST formula does not assume normal running narrative, but rather text materials consisting primarily of headings and phrases, such as found on questionnaires, application forms, brief multiple choice tests, etc.

All formulas are included in both our readability software packages -- Readability Calculations as well as the enhanced Readability Plus package -- both extremely useful tools for assessing readability levels of written materials -- whether by reading specialists, teachers, trainers, librarians, instructional writers, curriculum writers, policy and procedure writers, technical writers, authors of all types ...
