Readability Calculations

How do the programs work?

Using Readability Calculations to score text materials involves three steps: (1) you select the readability formula or formulas to be applied, then (2) enter the material to be scored, and (3) the readability program performs the readability analyses and displays the associated grade-level scores.

“Readability Calculations” is a package of computer programs, which together support nine readability formulas: Flesch Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, FOG, SMOG, Powers-Sumner-Kearl, Spache, Dale-Chall, FORCAST and Fry Graph.

 

Scoring material involves three steps:

 

(1)  First you select the formula(s) you wish applied to your material. Comprehensive user documentation accompanying the software may help you select the best formula for your use.

 

(2)  Then you enter the material - by keying, pasting or reading a file’s data into the program. To ensure reliable scoring the program prescribes precise pre-editing guidelines.

 

(3)  Finally the program analyzes the material entered and displays the readability score(s) for the formulas selected.  Example screens ...

 

   To view the Fry formula results, click Fry screen.

   To view the Dale-Chall formula results, click Dale-Chall screen.

   To view the Spache formula results, click Spache screen.

   To view all other formula results, click other formulas screen.
